Montgomery County Community College and Grumpy’s Handcarved Sandwiches, 137 E. High St., Pottstown, will be hosting a “meet and greet” event on Sept. 13 for the winning student chefs – Ayanna Marville and Kyle Edmonds – of the 2022 Grumpy’s Sandwich Challenge.
The public is invited to come between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to meet the student chefs and sample their winning sandwich, the Sweet & Savory Salmon. The restaurant owners, Sheila and Gene Dugan, will present framed menus that list the winning sandwich to the students.
The students previously received a cash prize from Grumpy’s along with t-shirts and towels and a free class each from MCCC at the time of the Sandwich Challenge in April 2022.
For every Sweet & Savory Salmon sandwich purchased, Grumpy’s donates $2 to MCCC’s Pottstown Campus Excellence Fund. The fund helps support students’ needs, including emergencies, technology, and housing, as well as program growth.
Grumpy’s Handcarved Sandwiches is a community-focused, family-owned business that specializes in hand-carved sandwiches and breakfasts. The restaurant is open from Tues.-Wed., 10 a.m.-3 p.m.; and Thurs.-Sat., 7:30 a.m.-3 p.m.
The Dugans hosted the 2022 Sandwich Challenge as part of MCCC’s 25th anniversary celebration of its Pottstown Campus. During the challenge, students from MCCC’s Culinary Arts Institute competed to make the best-tasting sandwich using mystery ingredients that included salmon, apples, Skinny Pop kettle corn and Bisquick mix.
The five teams of two students each spent 45 minutes chopping, mixing, cooking and plating their creations. The judges – MCCC President Victoria Bastecki-Perez, Montgomery County Board of Commissioners Vice Chair Kenneth E. Lawrence Jr. and Pottstown Area Health & Wellness President/MCCC Board of Trustees David Kraybill – tasted and rated each sandwich and determined that Marville and Edmonds were the winners.
The other participating CAI students were Michael Fortna, Vincenzo Nuzzolese, Selena Johnson, Sean Kahl, Gabrielle Williams, Tre’quan Norris, Nick Torres and Stephen Rowles.
