Students in the TRIO Upward Bound Program at Montgomery County Community College had the opportunity to put on lab coats and step into the role of scientists when they visited MCCC’s biotechnology classrooms in the Advanced Technology Center at the Blue Bell Campus.
During their visit, they performed a simple lab experiment to isolate DNA from their
own cheek cells. Through this hands-on process, students learned how to use some lab
equipment and saw how scientists could use DNA.
Before the experiment, MCCC Biology Associate Professor, Dr. Margaret Bryans, talked
about MCCC’s Biotechnology Associate in Applied Science Degree Program and how it prepares students for fascinating,
in-demand careers in biotechnology, biomanufacturing, biomedical research and the
pharmaceutical industry in general. After earning an associate’s degree, students
can transfer seamlessly to continue their education at a four-year institution or
start their careers.
The Upward Bound Program at MCCC is a free college preparatory program that helps
students develop skills, study habits, discipline and mindsets to succeed in high
school and college. Students receive academic advising; courses in career readiness,
English, science and math; hands-on experiences; tutoring; and the opportunity to
take free college courses. The program is available for students entering ninth through
eleventh grade at Norristown Area High School or Pottstown Senior High School.
