Tuition Refund

Board of Trustee Policy: 5.18

Purpose

To provide guidance on the circumstances in which a tuition refund is issued to credit and non-credit students.

Policy

A 100 percent tuition and fees refund shall not be made after the beginning of the semester/session for credit students or after the beginning of the first class meeting for non-credit students. Students may request an exception in the case of extenuating circumstances. Requests for exceptions are referred to the Tuition Refund Appeals Committee for review.

Procedure
  1. If a student officially drops or withdraws from a credit or non-credit class prior to and during the semester/session, tuition shall be refunded according to the following schedule.

    Refund schedule
    Refund periods run from 12 a.m. of the first day noted to 11:59 p.m. of the last day noted.

    15-week session

    • 100% tuition & all fees – Prior to first day of session
    • 100% tuition, no refund of fees – Day 1 to day 7 of session
    • 50% of tuition, no refund of fees – Day 8 to day 14 of session
    • 25% of tuition, no refund of fees – Day 15 to day 21 of session
    • No refund of tuition or fees – After 21st day of session

    15-week classes not scheduled to meet the first week of session

    • 100% tuition & all fees – Prior to first day of session
    • 100% tuition, no refund of fees – Day 1 to day 13 of session
    • 50% of tuition, no refund of fees – Day 14 to day 20 of session
    • 25% of tuition, no refund of fees – Day 20 to day 21 of session
    • No refund of tuition or fees – After 21st day of session

    14-week session

    • 100% tuition & all fees – Prior to first day of session
    • 100% tuition, no refund of fees – Day 1 to day 7 of session
    • 50% of tuition, no refund of fees – Day 8 to day 14 of session
    • 25% of tuition, no refund of fees – Day 15 to day 20 of session

    • 25% of tuition, no refund of fees – Day 7 to day 10 of session

    • No refund of tuition or fees – After 8th day of session

    4-week session

    • 100% tuition & all fees – Prior to first day of session
    • 100% tuition, no refund of fees – Day 1 to day 2 of session
    • 50% of tuition, no refund of fees – Day 3 to day 4 of session
    • 25% of tuition, no refund of fees – Day 5 to day 6 of session
    • No refund of tuition or fees – After 6th day of session

    3.5-week session

    • 100% tuition & all fees – Prior to first day of session
    • 100% tuition, no refund of fees – Day 1 to day 2 of session
    • 50% of tuition, no refund of fees – Day 3 to day 4 of session
    • 25% of tuition, no refund of fees – Day 5 of session
    • No refund of tuition or fees – After 5th day of session

    2-week session

    • 100% tuition & all fees – Prior to first day of session
    • 100% tuition, no refund of fees – Day 1 of session
    • 50% of tuition, no refund of fees – Day 2 of session
    • 25% of tuition, no refund of fees – Day 3 of session
    • No refund of tuition or fees – After 3rd day of session

    Non-standard length

    • 100% tuition & all fees – Prior to first day of class
    • 100% tuition, no refund of fees – The day before 10% of class meeting days
    • 50% of tuition, no refund of fees – The day before 15% of class meeting days
    • 25% of tuition, no refund of fees – The day before 20% of class meeting days
    • No refund of tuition or fees – From 20% of class meeting days onward

    Non-credit classes over 30 clock hours

    • 100% tuition & all fees – Prior to first day of class
    • 100% tuition, no refund of fees – The day before 10% of class meeting days
    • 50% of tuition, no refund of fees – The day before 15% of class meeting days
    • 25% of tuition, no refund of fees – The day before 20% of class meeting days
    • No refund of tuition or fees – From 20% of class meeting days onward

    All other non-credit classes

    • 100% tuition & all fees – Prior to first day of class
    • 100% tuition, no refund of fees – No refunds after day prior to first class meeting day


  2. Upon Board of Trustees approval of the Academic Calendar, tuition refund dates for standard length courses are established according to the schedule noted above and published with the registration add/drop dates.
  3. If a student officially drops or withdraws from a Workforce Development and Continuing Education class prior to the start of the first class session, a 100 percent tuition refund shall be made. For classes under 30 clock hours, no refunds are made after the course begins. Noncredit classes 30 clock hours and over, will follow the refund schedule above. Fees for non-credit materials, books, and supplies are not refundable. Exceptions are referred to the Tuition Refund Appeals Committee for review.
  4. A 100 percent refund of tuition and fees shall be made if the College cancels a class.
  5. Students may appeal tuition charges under certain extenuating circumstances, such as illness. Related questions should be directed to Tuitionappeals@mc3.edu.
  6. Courses that are dropped and added simultaneously are exempt.
  7. Exceptions to the policy are at the discretion of the College Bursar.
