MCGOPA 30th Anniversary Exhibition Sept. 1-26

Seventeen artists from across Montgomery County will exhibit more than 80 new works including paintings, photography, fibers, and jewelry pieces, which celebrate MCGOPA‘s 30th anniversary.

“Everything in the show is 30 inches by 30 inches, since it’s our 30th anniversary,” said Deborah Northey, MCGOPA co-gallery director and art show chair. “I’m proud of all the artists in the show. They are all magnificent and have different perspectives. They are all talented, artistic and creative and the variety on display is awesome.”

MCGOPA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, which provides a platform for artists to exhibit their work. As a co-operative artists group, it educates the public about the fine arts and offers professional collaboration and support to working artists, according to its website.

The organization features several art shows a year at the 431 Art Gallery, its location at 431 W. Valley Forge Rd, Upper Merion Community Center, King of Prussia, Pa. 19406.

“Sequential: Book Arts by Rowan K. Briggs” Sept. 1-Oct. 23

A four-panel page spread features separate drawings of a fox near a tree and a person with blue hair looking down. Text from the book appears over top of the photos. More than 100 mixed media pieces will be on display in the exhibition that reveal the process of making modern, artful comic books. The exhibition includes work from the artist’s own “Triskelion” series to an adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Macbeth.”

Briggs’s approach to bookmaking centers on strong storytelling and open-ended exploration of mixed media and collage, pushing the boundaries between comic books and modern artist books. This exhibition showcases the creative and production process behind Briggs’s works.

“The big part is the process,” said Briggs. “We’re trying to demonstrate how to go from an idea to a finished, public graphic novel. The other thing of interest is books come in different formats. Comics just aren’t about superheroes, and books can be works of art.”
Briggs said their favorite thing about this exhibition is reviewing their past work with fresh eyes.

“I’m an on-to-the-next project kind of person,” they said, “so it’s been nice to go back and say ‘Wow, I remember working on this.’ It’s a moment to celebrate the work I’ve done and the work I’ve put in.”
