Celebrating diversity through OneMontco Unity Series

unity day mcccFor an orchestra to perform well, it needs an ensemble of musicians playing a variety of instruments. In the same way, it is the combined diversity and talent of Montgomery County Community College’s campus communities that create an enriched learning environment where students can thrive.

The College is celebrating diversity, unity and inclusion through a series of events throughout the 2017-2018 academic year as part of its OneMontco Unity Series. The series kicked off with a Unity Rally on September 27 at both campuses. The rallies, which were open to the community, included Unity Walls made of 24x36-inch poster boards that participants could sign to solidify their commitment to unity. The boards are circulating around the campuses for additional signatures, and then they will be framed and displayed.

The next event of the series is the nationally acclaimed program, The Defamation Experience, on Thursday, October 12, 2017, from 11:10 a.m. to 1:10 p.m. in the Science Center Theater on the Central Campus in Blue Bell.

“Defamation” is an interactive courtroom drama written by Todd Logan that explores the issues of race, religion, gender, class and the law with the audience as the jury. Open to students, employees and the community, the play provides an opportunity for the audience to discuss these pertinent social issues facing our nation today. The event is free, but tickets are required.

The series continues with monthly events, including an International Day and ESL Fair on November 2 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Central Campus and the annual Presidential Symposium on Diversity on November 8, 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. The symposium features Dr. Derrick Pitts, chief astronomer and director of the Fels Planetarium at The Franklin Institute, who will share his knowledge about the diversity of the universe. In conjunction with the symposium, a contest “What does the universe mean to you?” will be held for students and employees to express their ideas about the diversity of the universe.
